LESSON SUMMARY

Lesson 3: Characteristics of Water

In this lesson we’ll look at 8 characteristics of water and their wisdom qualities at the ordinary, subtle, and awakened level.  Each of the qualities throughout this course (air, water, tree, etc.) are a channel of truth or a dimension of God.   As we view this awakened dimension through water we experience compassion, unconditional boundless love, interconnected warmth, surrender, pacing, sensuality, bliss, embracing and the divine mother.

8 Characteristics of Water

"Nothing in the world is a soft and yielding as water.
Yet for dissolving the hard and the inflexible, Nothing can surpass it.
The soft overcomes the hard; The gentle overcomes the rigid
Everyone knows this is true, But few can put this into practice.

Therefore the Master remains serene in the midst of sorrow.
Evil cannot enter his heart because he has given up helping
He is people’s greatest help.  True words seem paradoxical.” - Tao Ching: Stephen Mitchell translation

1) Compassion
The subtle expression of Water is: accepting, embracing, warm, and caring. Awakened Compassion, the awake expression of Water, spontaneously arises from emptiness. It is the care for the suffering of sentient beings. Compassion is capacity - it is not something we “do” from a part of us that is trying to act kindly. It naturally arises from the ground of our awareness. As we live from higher levels of mind we are in the felt sense of interconnectedness and the lack of separation. Thus, we can directly perceive people’s suffering. We also have the capacity to look past the outer display and understand people’s innocence. We see this in Jesus’s phrase, “forgive them for they do not know what they do”. When we can look past peoples protectors and see the suffering underneath, we can have compassion no matter what the behaviors these people are doing.

We are grounded in awake awareness and not merged in our parts or projections. As we rest in the ground of our awareness, and we can feel any level of an intensity, but not feel that we’re taking it on. If we lose our ground of awareness and fall into “subtle”, we are more likely to go on rides with people, to get caught in projections and suffering.

2) Unconditional boundless love
"As you are, my love”

Our true nature, in the quality of water, rejects nothing and accepts everything as it is. Water wisdom sees the perfection in us and in all beings. The indescribable beauty of everything as it is now. It is the “YES” to experience. Water is the perfect antidote to shame because when we view from this quality we understand that everything we are right now is good. Our needs are good! Our emotions are good! We are good! Our imperfections are perfect. Through the view of water, we have always been innocent and completely lovable.

3) Interconnected Warmth
Water knows we are one unified field of experience, and feels the direct experience that our body has no boundary and we are interconnected with everything. No one’s experience is outside of our experience or outside of our body, because our body is one boundless body, and everything is arising from within it. The felt experience of others evokes a natural compassion and helps us realize that everything we think, say, and do, impacts the shared field of experience.

Water experiences this interconnectedness as a fabric of existence and as an intimacy between beings. In the most human personal level, interconnectedness is displayed in our healthy bonding and interdependence on one another emotionally and physically.

4) Surrender
Water includes our capacity for surrender, our openness, with no resistance. We receive fully all that is and what’s to come, and we allow ourselves to be guided. We release control and trust and receive.

5) Divine Mother
Ultimate reality is beyond any describable “thing”, when we point to God, to true nature, it is indescribable. And, there are channels that we can find, or, “frequency ranges” that we can find, that open us to a whole dimension of reality, of God, and in this way we feel God as mother, as father. And we can feel “I am cared for by God. God is always loving me”. That is the bandwidth that we have opened to. And that bandwidth can be recognized through the heart and belly chakras. Those are the chakras that have the “window” to that bandwidth. That have the perceptive capacity for that particular frequency range.

In different religious traditions, the “frequency of God” that is Water, that is compassion, is displayed in the image of divine mother, such as Mother Mary in Christianity, who is here for all her children, or Tara or Quan Yin in Buddhism, or Yemoja in the Yoruban tradition. She has been recognized throughout the ages, throughout traditions. Through all images of divine mother, what is being pointed to is this divine frequency of God, this universal aspect of our true nature, that can emanate as a being. This ultimate divine feminine takes on different images or forms in these different cultures, but they are all pointers to one source. The Warm, loving, compassionate deities across traditions are typically represented through the feminine.

6) Sensuality and Bliss
Water is the bliss belly, the wisdom that enjoys the sensual nature of reality. When we view with water, simple experiences of food, touch, and texture can become rapturous. In its most human expression, water is the wisdom that understands the need for touch and enjoys the pleasure of ALL THE SENSES.

Water is also the natural sensualness of being, the bliss that arises as awake awareness experiences the texture and taste of life. Walking in warm bliss with all of nature, where we are touched by everything, all the leaves and petals and grasses, all the trees and the sky, even the textured cement of the street becomes ecstatic…

The world is gifting itself to us all the time, we only need to open to receive it, like a flower opens to the warmth and light of the sun.

It’s all singing our original name. The invisible name. The immortal name. The faceless presence.

7) Embracing
Embracing our experience, Water warmly embraces the parts of us, and in others, that are in need, holding and reassuring the parts that are scared, need comfort, and feel alone. Water is honoring, listening to, and cherishing the parts that are protecting or managing, connecting with curiosity and getting their worldview. Recognizing the inherent intelligence in all parts of our self and in others, water allows us to be as we are and gently offers what’s needed. A radical loving embrace of all parts! Emotion, sensation, energy, etc.

Water allows the arising without resistance - staying connected, not moving away, staying fully connected allowing the full range of experience.

8) Pacing
Because water has no agenda it is patient and does not push. It allows for a pacing that is attuned and connected. Water is connected to the second level of the subtle fields - the emotional level - which is a slower frequency than the mental field. Its pacing reflects the intelligence of our limbic system. When we relate from water there is a pacing that allows us to feel our emotions and attune to other’s emotional and limbic system.
